I use to be a correctional officer at a county prison work camp and I will saying paying the "guards" as you call them would make a world of difference. Where I worked at we were a lot more patient with inmates and treated them a lot more humane than state prisons. The biggest difference was that we got paid almost double what state correctional officers made, so we basically got paid enough to be nice while state correctional officers didn't make much more than minimum wage in my state and yet expected to have the patience and professionalism of a saint. Also if they paid more they could expect that kind of professionalisn and patience instead of hiring young kids fresh out of high school who's first time being away from their parents for more than a weekend is being at the correctional academy.

Larry, you are so right. "Programs" that are supposed to assist with rehab back into society fail the incarcerated and the families. DOC needs overhauled in a very bad way.

Hey Larry, I love these prison videos you make and keep up the great work. Also do you reckon that you could do a review on the Central American country El Salvador and how they have built the world's largest prison that holds 40 thousand inmates who are all gang members? Once again keep up the great work!! Love from Australia!!

This guy is great. He should have a position at the Bureau of Prisons.

I like the CONCEPT of Unicor... the problem is its being implemented improperly. What they SHOULD be doing in my opinion: Pay the inmates working there the exact same as what someone on the outside would be making, then charge them the proper taxes, food/rent etc and let them keep the rest in an account to either save or spend.. This will teach them life skills that a lot of them dont have, while also giving them a sense of accomplishment.

I have a buddy who did about a year in county jail, And 2 years in state prison in Pennsylvania. According to him, State prison felt like an upgrade. The food was slightly less crappy. It was a little easier to make long-term connections and the phone time cost less money

"We would concentrate on rehabilitation. Real rehabilitation, the way I know it. We'd focus on re-entry. We re-enter them into society in the right way. And the first way; is in the head." So re-habilitation via bullet to the head? Larry calls himself a practical man. I can see that. 20:06

I believe that we need to end the war on drugs. It seems no one has learned from prohibition. Making things that people want illegal will just make people want it more and take more risks to get it and the demand leads to the creation of gangs and the mafia.

here in norway, we have an amazing rehabilety programs, plus you can only get 21 years max, though you can get higher if you arent mentally sane

15:20 that is just insane to me. Establishments that handle products for human consumption are subject to random unannounced inspections. But, prisons who handle humans aren't? That's just crazy.

I like the theory of choices being overwhelming. Its like going to another country and realizing you cant automate anymore. You gotta be on your toes all the time, regardless of how youre prepared or able.

I agree with you on rehabilitation and the psychological healing that needs to be done with inmates. They need to learn mindfulness and helping other people, learn impulse control, patience, and ability to focuse on tasks. Even sociopaths and psychopaths can learn to help people and have effective empathy it just takes time, therapy, and hard work wich is most needed. On a side note art and pets do wonders for anyone especially if they are lonely. Thats my two sense comming from someone who has spent a week and a half in the mental hospital for anxietty severe depression and psycosis.

I’m very ashamed of our prison system in the US. I believe entirely that some people are to dangerous to not have quarantined & that we also need some form of consequences to deter harmful behavior but us prisons go way way beyond that in the harm they inflict. Compassion for sentient beings should always be our priority.
