This is...sad. Mary, usually seen as a villian, is tortured young girl who never had a true father. Her soul is broken and she doesn't know where to go or what to do. Then, she sees Ib, looks like she could be a friend, as well as Garry, who bears a striking resemblance to her creator. She pulls them into her twisted made up world, at a desperate attempt at freedom and life, but in the best ending, is left and burned, to stay in the cursed art gallery forever.

Mary's story is so sad. I feel like Mary was misunderstood. In the moment that Ib found Mary's painting, Mary probably felt afraid that they would hate her since she's just a painting. So her first reaction is to pull a knife. Then Ib, startled by this, decides to burn the painting, but realizing the that it was Mary's life force. Mary just wanted friends. She didn't want her secret to get out in fear she'd be hated. That's my theory.

Mary is a horribly misunderstood character. All I can think about with Mary is her father, Geurtena the artist. Geurtena put so much love and passion into his art and created an entire fabricated world within his gallery. He especially loved the idea of Mary. Thats why she was so fleshed out and characterized in comparison to his other art. Then he passed on and Mary had no one. She just didn't want to be alone anymore. Is that so wrong?

I think the part that tears me up inside the most is actually the fact that Geurtena never intended for any of this to happen. He absolutely loved his paintings, to the point that they came to life, but he didn't KNOW that they would come to life. If he did, he wouldn't have left them like that. He would've arranged for them to have a better life as best he could, especially once he died. He never meant to leave Mary alone, but she thinks he did anyway because she doesn't understand the concept of death.

To anyone commenting about how she looks like Rika, to clear up any misunderstandings that might occur that is Mary. She's from Ib, a game which was created years before Mystic Messenger. Rika is the one that looks like her. But I can see why you'd mistake Rika for her imo. Just wanna clear things up!

ive always loves mary the most for some reason, and tbh it's never even slightly changed. the whole entire game i was rooting for her. yeah, i mean i like gary, but for some reason i've always just felt this connection to mary. idk just my opinion on her.

Okay, I see some people don't know where this song's from.
It's from the game "Ib" (made by kouri), it's a wonderful game, play it and bring the fandom back to life.

It follows the experiences of a 9-old girl named Ib who visits an art gallery with her parents.
While looking around, she finds herself stuck in a strange, surreal world where the art has come to life. What's worse is that Ib's life is now linked to that of a red rose she picks up, and if all the petals fall she will die.
Luckily, Ib finds friends along her journey. They are a man named Garry whom she saves, and a girl about her own age named Mary whom they bump into later, both of whom have roses of their own. Together, the three of them solve puzzles and try to find a way to get back to the real world.

Alas, poor Mary. Viewed as an evil, sadistic being who wished to ruin the friendship between Ib and Garry, when she was so much more.

All the years of being left alone, with creations that can only rarely be described as being similar to a human, let alone a kind one. The creation of a painter, left to rot away in a world that no being, let alone a young one such as Mary should ever have to live in.

She saw Ib and Garry's arrival as a chance, a chance to live. A chance to no longer bear her burden she has carried for so long, taken away from her by Ib and Garry's friendship. In Ib, their is no villain, just a lonely, once innocent girl left to rot by the one who created her.
