I BOUGHT AN E85 BMW Z4! Here’s Why…

I posted a video a while back announcing my beloved W204 C63’s replacement, and in turn it would need a replacement in the region of around; £4,000.

So I bought this lovely 2004 E85 BMW Z4 3.0! It’s a car I’ve always wanted to experience and own since I was juvenile. However, this car doesn’t come without it’s issues, in which I delve into later on in the video…

I own an Z4M in red, 88Km and think Chris Bangle got it right. These cars are never going to look old, like most of what he designed, sadly the car world seems to think cars are appliances. Look for water in the left hand pillar where the root motor lives, and ensure every water drain is unblocked. For some reason these cars seem to like to draw power when idle, even with the alarm off, so I use an intelligent battery charger on mine when at rest to keep everything sane. I think the Z4 is just so cool, I look forward to seeing you post more on this.

Had mine for close to 4 years now - still runs great though i sometimes wish for a bit more power, sound is always great with the roof down especially with any object that can make the sound bounce back !

Exactly the same spec as mine i see which is funny to see with a few subtle differences

The sticky door handle, roof motor, ABS sensor as well as the condensation in the headlights are common issues on the E85 but the engine is bulletproof if you take care of it

Great buy, I've always loved this generation of Z4, and the later one as well - both underrated. I like some of Bangle's design quirks like the side mounted indicator with the logo on it. I hope you get the issues sorted out easily, my S80 had a few small issues in my first year or two of ownership. My battery drain came from a satellite radio module that was active all the time - forums and Facebook are your friend.

I'm hoping to see a MPG test in the future and maybe a road trip

You could always have the engine running when you operate the roof, that way you could pinpoint if it is the battery or not 👍🏻

The top motor is in the left rear fender, I posted a response but didn't finish watching, I would check the connection under the tape which looks a bit dodgy...

A friend has the si version and he said the alarm issue is probably the under bonnet alarm switch...had to change his as the alarm kept going off. The alarm is supposed to go off if you lock it with the fob ( primes alarm ) and then open it with the key as it assumes it's been broken into and why not use the fob. If you lock it with the key the alarm isn't primed and so you can open with the key. Great video and I love the car 😊

I bought a manual 3.0i Z4 in October last year, small issue with the electric steering but other than been brilliant, although I've only done 400 miles since then lol... it just stays in the garage!
