My flight on the Liberty Foundation's B-17F Memphis Belle

I recently got to experience a flight aboard a B-17F Flying Fortress in Smyrna, TN. The real Memphis Belle is not flyable and is being restored by the Air Force for display, this B-17 was used in it's place in the movie "Memphis Belle" and is operated by the Liberty Foundation. This was an awesome experience, and makes me even more appreciative of the B-17 crews who flew the missions over Europe and especially those who didn't come home.

The 'movie' Memphis Belle that is currently touring was actually a Douglas Aircraft-license-built B-17G serial no. 44-83546. It was built in 1945 in Long Beach, CA and never saw combat. It was a staff VIP transport for most of its military life.  After being sold as surplus in 1954 it was converted into a water bomber until sold at auction in 1981 to the late David Tallichet and his Military Aircraft Restoration Corporation. In 1982 it was restored to a B-17F configuration. Since then, additional bits and pieces (early Sperry top turret cover, smaller navigator's windows, earlier 'pointed' nose bubble, etc.)have been added. What gives it away as a later 'G' model is the offset waist gun openings.

Very cool video!
It's actually a b-17G modified to an F for the Memphis belle movie. It originally would have had a chin turret.
