In this screencast tutorial I cover how to back up your server. I go over a good back up strategy which includes incremental back ups, cloning your server drive, and backing up your settings like Open Directory and all of the other server components allowing you to quickly get back up and running should anything go wrong.

As always thanks for watching! If you find this screencast helpful, please like, favorite and share it so others on the internet can find it. Feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions:).

Bender is awesome. I am glad you have heard of it. Lots of people have not. I have had to restore from it. Just a no brainer tool and we put it on every OS X Server.

Thank you Todd! Another great video of helpful tips. I will be downloading and using both SuperDuper and Bender. They look like great additions to using Time Machine!!

I noticed that you created an archive in the Open Directory portion of the Server app. This video and the Server backup in your Mavericks tutorial show how to create an archive but my question is once you have the archive how do you restore from the Open Directory archive that was created? Great videos too.

Thanks Todd for the video! Once again I have learned something new... If I can make one suggestion, I know it's easy to type in the URL's of the software you mentioned in the video but if you were to include links to the software in your comments section that would be helpful. Again, Thanks for your videos and I look forward to your next one!

Todd the vids are very very helpful, Thanks you.
Can you show how to do, Profile Manager, VPN please, I would like to see how you can tie iPad and iPhone to the server.
Thank You

Hi Todd - This was extremely useful - especially the continuously updating clone with Super Duper and the Bender server backup.  Although the Time Machine local server backup does include special server backup functionality - using it to restore to other than the machine that created the backup can be very problematic.  A more realistic scenario (even in a home server setup) - would be the need or desire to move a working server to a different piece of hardware - and the Time Machine "server" backup may not be usable in that scenario.  I wanted to stress the need to have a restore plan that is proven and tested to make the restore process less of a nightmare  - should it arise.  Would it be possible to provide a video specifically centered around restoring the server to both the same hardware as well as "different" hardware - as I think that would be really useful to those of us who are experimenting with Server and are following your screen casts on a regular basis.  I have not yet successfully "moved" a server myself - but I suspect that the Bender server backup and/or or a clone - would be the key factor in a successful restore to another piece of hardware.

I learned the (very) hard way last week, thou shall backup the open directory! Another good video. I use a network drive for time machine backup ( QNAP) its slow but it works good enough. I may exclude the Data drive tho ( 6TB raid) thats cover by BackBlase and a weekly Carbon Copy Cloner. May give Super Duper a go. Does the licence cover multiple installs ?

EDIT. Bender is
