1 - Chess is believed to be originated in INDIA, in the Gupta Empire before 6th century AD
The word "Checkmate" is derived from the Persian phrase “shah mat” (the king is helpless)
2 - Theoretically 5,949 moves can be played in the longest game of chess
3 - July 20 is celebrated as World Chess Day
4 - Cleveland Public Library has the largest chess book collection in the world with over 30,000 chess books and chess periodicals
5 – The first ever Space vs. Earth chess game between astronauts on orbit and representatives of the Earth was played on June 9, 1970
A unique chess set, designed by a young engineer Mikhail Klevtsov for zero gravity conditions, was used in that game since magnetic pieces are not allowed on zero-gravity environments

11 - Hou Yifan is a Youngest Female to achieve Grandmaster title at the age of 14 years and 6 months and also the youngest to win the Women’s World Chess Championship
12 - Awonder Liang on 29th July 2012 beat Grandmaster Larry Kaufman in a tournament held in USA and became youngest player to beat Grandmaster at the age of 9 years
13 - Russian GM Yuri Averbakh, born on 8th February, 1922 is the Oldest Living Grandmaster
14 - As of January 2020, Magnus Carlsen has the Longest Unbeaten streak of 118 games He also holds the record of highest rating of 2882 points, achieved in May 2014
15 - Judit Polgar is considered as the strongest female chess player of all time
She is the first woman who have surpassed 2700 rating point, reaching a career peak rating of 2735, achieved in 2005
16 - As of December 2019, Spain tops the list of highest number of active players with 15,461 players followed by France (13,716) and Germany (11,989)
17 - Armenia is the first country in the world to make chess mandatory in schools and Armenia has one of the most chess grandmasters per capita
18 - Garry Kasparov is a Russian Grandmaster and consider to be one of the greatest player of all time and holds the record for most consecutive professional tournament victories (15 tournament)
19 - Iranian Grandmaster Ehsan Ghaem Maghami holds the world record for most simultaneous games playing against 604 players winning 580, drawing 16 and losing 8
20 - Indian Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand is the only player in chess history to have won World Chess Championship in tournament format, match format, knockout format and rapid format
