Should read the party programm of all german major parties.
You'd be more informed than 99% of the german population if you did just that.

It's interesting how much Americans want to distance themselves from "being political". I'd say it's encouraged to have political opinions in Germany - as long as they're informed and reflected. That's what we have political education for in schools

5:33 the last democracy was destroyed by a party that got the most votes in an election. Didn't make them less radical.

Radical relative to the traditional democratic culture and values. Another example: The NSDAP, the nazi party also won the election in 1933. Still you wouldn't argue if they were radical or not, right? That's also a common missunderstanding. People argue that parties were democratic because people voted for them. No, parties are democratic if their values are democratic. The nazis rose to power in a democratic election. That doesn't make the NSDAP a democratic party.

What do the BSW and a sock have in common?
You cannot tell whether they are left or right.

11:48 you hit the nail on the head!
It is populism. We are in a crisis of so many layers, problems everywhere. Unfortunately, political discourse is so bad at the moment in germany, nobody is really talking about the actual problems in a constructive way. And those who do are not covered by the media enough. The solutions to the problems are complicated and the general public does not want to engage in complicated political stuff. The parties that gain popularity at the moment are those that offer the most simple solutions, although radical. And blaming others and complaining is apparently also a way to gain popularity as a german politician

The so called "far left" party BSW isn't even far left or even exclusively left. They are a mix of economically left positions with conservative positions when it comes to social issues. On top of that they are big russia / putin fans (which is found on the far left as well as on the far right, to be fair).

"Afd - Why is it in english? I'm stupid!". This made me laugh so hard, because I can relate. Thank you!

it's a bit overengeneered because after ww2 the british demanded western Germany to have a first past the post system and the americans insisted on proportional representation
we had to comply and have both now in a way that actually functions (unlike in the UK and US)

Stop being "not political" and call out bs when you see it. It is okay to have a political opinion.

"It's almost like an oxymoron: People are democratically voting in an anti-democrat party!? It seems odd." - the fact that you say this as an American is so ironic 😂😂😂 no offence hahaha ❤

Björn Höcke's "Nazi rhetoric" was the slogan "everything for Germany". It's from the Liberation Wars, early 19th century, and yes, the National Socialists used it as well.

Same thing is about to happen in Austria. The FPÖ (our AFD, whos founder and first party chair was a former SS member and member of the Nazi Reichstag) is pretty much guaranteed to get first place with 1/3 of votes (unless the polls are very off). Sadly compared to Germany our conservative party is more willing to ally with fascists (they also still glorify the Austrian pre-Hitler brand of fascism under Dollfuß) than in Germany.
With all likelihood we will end up with a conservative + fascist coalition that will: undermine civil rights, further hamper the polices work of keeping an eye of far right elements (and our ability to cooperate with international allies, because nobody wants to share intelligence that will end up in Moscow, which makes it harder to prevent terrorism), absolutely wreck the budget, sell out anything they can to their rich cronies and Russia, and isolate Austria in Europe.
Not looking forward to repairing the damage they cause in a single legislature-period for the next couple of decades...

German comment sections or comment sections about German political content tend to be very conservative with the exception of most German subreddits, which tend far left.

Yes, normally I would support your suggestion! AfD and CDU together would rule the two eastern countrys with little opposition! BUT: Some years ago, a politician of the FDP (Freie Demokratische Partei/Free Democratic Party) became Ministerpräsident through the help of CDU and AfD. A political earthquake followed, after which the FDP Politician had to give up the post after some days because the federal Partyleaders were shocked by his actions and the leading CDU politician of Thuringia had also to leave politics because of the same reason: the CDU was shocked, that their leading politician made a deal with AfD.
Soooo-->sorry for my english! There will be no deal!
As a citizen of the most northern Province Schleswig-Holstein I can proudly say: we voted the AfD out of our stateparliament and I'm so proud of it. :D And also the far left party "Die Linke" (The Left) we threw out by don`t voting for them. We're definitely no socialists but also no fascists in the North ---> Seems, that "The North remembers" what happened under the rule of fascists and communists in german History. That's why I suggest, that this strange personal-cult-party BSW (Bündnis (Alliance) Sahra Wagenknecht (Name of the party-founder) won't have a big chance in our province.
The next voting will be in Brandenburg, also an eastern Province and the shock will be big again...but wait until votings are in the western, southern und northwestern Provinces. Then this extremists and putinlover partys won't have an answer, why their votingnumbers are so low! To understand the political developement in eastern Germany, you have to understand german history especially after the fall of the Berlinwall.
