What would Henri gain by becoming King? Being assassinated? Being forced into constitutionalism? The man was wealthy as hell and lived a life full of pleasure and bliss. People have a tendecy to assume people only matter as much as their position in the hierarchy. But what if the hierarchy is a stupid revolutionary post modern hierarchy? I rather die holding my beliefs than be remembered as an opportunist who traded his beliefs for power. He did not need the job, so he chose his honour. Thank you for telling his story in the depth it deserves.

Each lecture is very serious and doesn’t delve into useless joking or pointless doubling back, it’s absolutely delightful!

19th century France was practically ungovernable, Henri made the right choice ultimately. He had no governing experience and yet would need to be on par with Bismarck to restore the country and royalism at that point. The Republic was a more centrist position when compared against the new left in the form of the Paris Commune. I think he understood this all very well and used the flag as an excuse to bow out and live his life in peace, after all the Orleanists had no problem with the tricolor a few decades prior.

First and I am glad I caught this. It opens up a period of hope for me but I ultimately agree with the man. You could not govern a France as King who want the tri-colour to symbolise the country, the republic that killed his kinsman. He was betrayed by so many as well so psychologically he would be terrified of any strange looks as it were. Also when I heard that alternative history scenario I understand why the paywall is Edit: necessary.

The Comte de Chambord strikes me as a fundamentally good and righteous, but ultimately overly intellectual man, who was unwilling to make petty sacrifices for the chance at restoring his throne. Something I think, his ancestors would have found absurd.

There are so many French Republics, I need to do a maths refresher course before I study them.

Absolutely wonderful. A richly described character and story about 19th Century French politics I was unaware of.

He threw away a restoration because the flag being the old white one was so important to him

Yes .... my full throated support for your proposed 2 subjects - Vichy and de Gaulle.
Konrad Adenauer is very notable; though to trace a thread of biography through the dense layers of his time and location would require the powers of a mountain goat.
The establishment of other European monarchs in London during the WWII occupation of their realms is surely not frequently examined.
A biography of Pp St. Pius IX, pastor astride a great chunk of tumultuous history would be a many faceted jewel.

Hey AM! Another great video! I watched it when it premiered but have rewatched it several times! Do you have plans to do a video on Louis, Duke de Bourgogne (the Petite Dauphin)? Another Prince compared to Saint Louis IX, and another King who never was upon whom much hope was placed.

A really bizarre story - "all this for a napkin!".

Would be great if you could do a video about Bismarck and how evil this man was. He placed all the pawns ♟️ in order to set the stage for WW1 and WW2 that will lead to WW3.

Bismarck would take orders from Mazzini and Pike. This is the reason why they could not allow the monarchy in France to return.

Haven't listened to the stream yet. Is AM familiar with the Josie's podcast? They mention this period a bit. Pope Leo XIII***, Rapprochement of Catholics with the liberao democratic regimes, etc

King Henry V of France is a Saint and his body will be found intact. He will be made a Catholic saint and is born for a great miracle.
May the power of the precious blood of Jesus Christ the Son of God bring him back to Life to save France from the evil they have become.
He is the last true Royalty from the house of David. He will be resurrected and will reign again to bring Glory to Mary ( Fleur de Lis) and her son Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
