Great to see Spirit Island still going strong! I just got into this year, and it is my FAVORITE co op game to play. I have not picked up any expansions yet, but I hope they add more variety (and difficulty) to the game!

Gloomhaven or Frosthaven for newcomer? Neither - Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion is the starting place. One can trial the game system without breaking the bank. Shoot, a few months ago, I bought a copy on Amazon (USA) for $26 !!!

Frosthaven is like 200 times better than Gloomhaven. If you haven't played either, start with Jaws of the Lion. There is no contest about that.

Jaws of the Lion should be the first Gloomhaven for anyone. After that, it's kind of a wash as to which is better. Gloomhaven dungeons have less variety. Almost all of them are about going into the dungeon and killing everything. The characters are more uneven too with some that are overpowered and others that suck. However, Frosthaven's dungeon complexity can get in its own way. Plus, the city phase really bogs down the game with upkeep. It's novel for your first 10-15 plays, but it doesn't hold up for 80+ plays.

For a new player I would recommend Jaws of the Lion over either box; second edition might smooth out the early difficulty hump of Gloomhaven but right now both big boxes ae big asks to start with.

My four favorite games are on this list: Terraforming Mars, Ark Nova, Earth, and Wingspan. More cards! More cards!

Also: I have played Heat 3x. And I'm getting better. In the most recent game, I came in next to last. 😂🎉

My group has finished both Gloomhaven and Frosthaven. I like the Gloomhaven classes more as I feel they are more focused in their roles (Healer/Damage/Tank/Support) than the Frosthaven classes (some have minor focus, but most are jack-of-all-roles). That's not saying Frosthaven classes are bad, I just enjoy Gloomhaven's more.
That being said, I very much enjoy literally (in it's true meaning) everything else Frosthaven offers over Gloomhaven.

We are halfway thru Frosthaven and have run thru Gloomhaven twice. While Frosthaven has much more content, if starting out, I would recommend it as it has a much gentler learning curve. The first scenario in Gloomhaven is a beast, while in Frosthaven, it is not so punishing. Only downside is that there are Gloomhaven references in Frosthaven which may give minor spoilers.

Just learned Ark Nova on Thanksgiving. There is definitely going to be a lot of that and Terraforming Mars in my near future because all my gaming friends love them.

Ark Nova is one we just keep revisiting. We love the new expansion, too. Not only is the theme one of our favorites, but the photos are great and the gameplay is so immersive. I think the designer did a fabulous job with the expansion. It is enough different to be exciting to learn but not disruptive to the basics of the original game. I think my new favorite card is the one where you get petting zoo animals at 3 less costs ("horse whisperer"). My favorite part of zoos are petting zoos. Give me ordinary, chubby animals any day over the wild ones I can't feed. XD Hey...maybe that is why I have
