This also explains why the luminosity of stars is extremely dependent on mass. The probability of quantum tunneling is highly nonlinear so stars even slightly more massive than the sun will be noticeably brighter (assuming they are at around the same stage of evolution). For example, Sirius A is only about twice the sun's mass but shines roughly 25 times brighter and Bellatrix is 8.6 times more massive but shines 20, 000 times brighter than the sun.

To add to what you mentioned: the process by which new elements or atoms created in the Sun is called Stellar nucleosynthesis. It is the combination of two Hydrogen atoms, becoming Deuterium, and then becoming a stable form of Helium, He4.

TUNNELING mostly used to explain MICRO-/NANO Electronic behaviour of Electrons in Solid-state crystal.. (near AMBIENT temperature) not in Thermal FISSION/Fusion of star.
