Language Endangerment

A overview of language endangerment, including brief discussions on the severity of the language endangerment crisis, causes of language endangerment, and why everyone should care about the increasing disappearance of languages.

ERROR: at around the 1:00 mark, I mistakenly said, "indigenous languages, like Quechua, are no longer being passed down to children as a first language", but I should have said, "indigenous languages, like Quechua, are increasingly no longer being passed down to children as a first language". To be clear, currently Quechuan languages are passed down to children as a first language (but this is happening with decreasing frequency).

Mr. Ashworth, it's so good that you talk about such issues in linguistics and language, which most people perhaps overlook. Also, I think the term "Cultural Genocide" which had been frequently used by a Turkish professor plays a huge role in this issue. Some countries are trying to gain political advantage by replacing the official languages of other countries with their own using social manipulation and making these countries' education language their own language. I think such issues like this in linguistics are not spoken enough, I'm so grateful that you, sir make this type of content. I'm eagerly looking forward to more of your videos. Please keep going on!!! Love from Turkey 🙂
