Babangida's not present at this meeting is not as critical as that of President Obasanjo who has been in the news in the last one week meeting with members of the house representative making damaging statement about politicians in general. He also supported the current protest which was likely to be addressed in this gathering. As a former president who was voted in by Nigerians and also well respected elder stateman not only in Nigeria but in the Africa continent, his presence was expected in such a meeting called most especially after a nationwide protest. This was an opportunity for him to talk about all the criticism he has for the administration and offer advice on how some of the problems facing the nation should be addressed and overcome. For example certain demands were made of the president that require consultation with the level of stakeholders present in the meeting and it was gratifying to see the president call for this meeting. Whatever decision was arrived in this meeting is likely to be binding regardless of how those who did not attend feel about it. President Obasanjo owes Nigerians an explanation as to why he was not present in a gathering that was not political but requires former presidents presence. How do you prove to Nigerians that you mean what you say in public places and the media when you cannot meet face to face with the people you criticize all the time? There is no excuse for such avoidance of national responsibility if he still want to maintain any credibility and relevance.
