You have LITERALLY not figuratively helped me more with this video as to how to help myself with my ARFID flare ups when I can’t eat for weeks and don’t have substantial meals for months at a time. You have genuinely saved my life, I am in your debt. Here in the UK we have truly abysmal health “care” and it’s getting so bad I know elderly people having to go to dealers for things like insulin and penicillin, people have no idea- I thought ARFID WAS going to take my life but with the idea of self feeding tubes and this information it’s incredibly simple to do and I am so thankful for your insight!

Ways to check correct NG tube placement: xray (initially), oral check for coiling, using a stetoscope to listen for the gurgle while you plunge air using syringe into the stomach, aspirate for stomach contents and use the content from the syringe to check pH, measure the NG tube to ensure measurement is consistent

After flushing it with water for the last time, should I wait until the water fully disappears on the tube into the nose before closing the cap or should I kink and close the tube after the water leaves the syringe?

Would the air be bad if I leave it open a bit longer to make sure the water fully reached the stomach?
I'm not a med student, just a relative trying to feed a family member and got fuzzy with instructions.

When drawing fluid from the stomach, there seems to be some brown or reddish brown content. Is this normal? My dad is on NGT as he’s cancer in the esophagus. He’s receiving radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
