James Ivory on MAURICE’s Sexiest Scene | Making a Scene

James Ivory — one half of the legendary production company Merchant Ivory Productions, which gave us The Remains of the Day, Howards' End, and A Room with a View — visited TIFF days after his historic Oscar win for Best Adapted Screenplay (Call Me by Your Name). Ivory is now the oldest Academy Award winner of all time. Prior to a special screening of his newly restored cult classic Maurice, which stars Hugh Grant in his second feature-film role, Ivory revealed that an unplanned happenstance resulted in the film's sexiest scene.

I think he means sensual & tender.... not sexy

This scene really makes clear the difference between sexy and sexual. Nothing sexual happens there, yet it is the sexiest scene.

This transcended any physical notion of sexy. This scene is sublime - it is the culmination of the collision of two souls recognizing each other as part of one whole. "Perhaps we both awakened each other, " says Hall, and it is exactly so. I didn't feel hot, as in turned on, or felt that this scene is 'sexy.' Instead, I felt as if I was ascending into some sort of dimension of love and beauty that escapes any human notion of it. This scene is much, much bigger.

I'm sorry but a young Hugh Grant really beats out EVERY other new "pretty man" in the industry and whatever there'll be in the future

I think this is one of the most beautiful scenes in cinematic history, with perfect music, perfect acting and the perfect timing between spoken words and silence. The first time I watched it I was moved to tears from the beauty of it, and every time it's like the first, and I watched this movie like ten times.

Clive was more open in the beginning yet it’s Maurice who lands up excepting his sexuality at the end. Clive is stuck in a meaningless marriage.

Just my POV : Yes the tension between Clive and Maurice was extraordinary at the beginning but with time not only did Clive start to shut his feelings but he also told Maurice to do so. He would never even kiss Maurice properly when they were alone. Now I don't blame Clive cause the time and scenario was that way, but with Scudder Maurice could finally let himself free and not feel guilty about it. Not only did Alec love him but he also made Maurice become one with himself. I for one am quite satisfied with the ending.

It is a classic, period. Not a "cult" one.

To those who say that Maurice should've just closed the door, it wasn't that simple. I think the dorms at Cambridge and Oxford were built to have doors that could only be locked by the headmasters. The headmasters knew what was up, so to prevent temptation, the doors couldn't lock unless they themselves locked them. This affair between Maurice and Clive was not the only homosexual fling going on between handsome, randy young men in those universities. LOL.

Hughie Grant's performance was splendid. I'll have to find this classic again so I can enjoy it for what it is.

Maurice's sexiest scene should be renamed saddest scene for many reasons. Not only the interruption but the denial. Don' t really know this story. I hope it gets better.
