Machu Picchu: The Lost Mountaintop City Of The Incas

Machu Picchu is one of the most famous and most visited ancient sites in Peru. It began to be built by the Inca Empire in 1420. Machu Picchu means "Old Hill or Old Mountain Peak" in the Quechua language of the Incas.

Machu Picchu is an ancient city with more than 150 structures. These structures include baths, dwellings, shelters, temples, terraces, cave sacred stones, and cemeteries. Stones weighing more than 50 pounds were used to build it and it is still a mystery how these stones were transported to the top of the mountain. It is speculated that they were human-powered by laborers brought in from outside the Inca empire.

The purpose of Machu Picchu is still controversial. It may have been used as a royal residence or a secret ceremonial center. But its most interesting feature is its use as an observatory. Twice a year, the sun stands directly on the Intihuatana stone and casts no shadow.

While other cities of the Inca civilization were destroyed during the Spanish invasion, Machu Picchu was preserved thanks to its secret location. This makes it one of the best-preserved Inca cities.

It is not known exactly how many years this city was actively used and abandoned. However, it is estimated that it was built in approximately 1420 and used until the last broken resistance of the Incas in 1572. After 1572, it was abandoned by the Incas. It was never used again. Moreover, the limited information that existed about this city has gradually disappeared over time. It is thought that only the locals in the region are aware of it. In 1902 it was officially discovered for the first time. Therefore, Machu Picchu remained hidden at the top of the mountain for about 330 years.

It has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and named one of the Seven Wonders of the New World. Today, thousands of people visit every year.
