Something about this clip and a few other scenes make it clear that there are layers to Misuzu that she's not revealing just yet. Like, maybe she's got an air of loneliness that keeps people at arms length, but Tomo and Carol fill the void in her heart, even if her patience is only so great. And Carol's mother noticed that right away when Misuzu made that claim.

I think Misuzu's answer made Carol's mom figure out Misuzu's sadistic nature and felt sorry for her.
