Interview with ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) on their proposal for the Walrus-class submarine replacement program. The German shipbuilder is proposing a submarine based on the future Type 212CD (already ordered by the German Navy and Royal Norwegian Navy).

=====================

Holger Isbrecht, head of NL submarine replacement programme, answered our questions:
- What are you proposing to the Royal Netherlands Navy ?
- What is the share of local content ?
- Is there a key design feature that stands out ?
- Is your design future-proof ? For example, can it conduct seabed warfare operations ?

The interview was recorded during NEDS 2022 on 17 November 2022. (NEDS stands for "NIDV Exhibition Defence & Security" - NIDV stands for "Netherlands Industries for Defence and Security").

During the event, Naval News interviewed all three contenders as well as the head of DMO (Defense Materiel Organization, the procurement office) about the Walrus-class replacement program.

I can not even begin to imagined the quality of technologies that will go into this submarine. We are talking decades of experience crammed into that small hull.

Would not be surprised if the Dutch choose this since the Germans chose Damen for its next frigates.

Interesting, I am glad TKMS has open up to Naval News on design n offering as Australian we didn’t get hear any information on TKMS offering bid on Australian future submarines competition. It would interesting to see what TKMS future support they have in design n maintenance.

So after been quite for sometime TKMS is finally speaking about there offering it seem to be a bit modified compared to the standard Type 212CD for both German and Norway

This interview reminds me of an old joke about the difference between the sales philosophy of America, England and Germany. Ask an American company about their product and they send you a catalog. Ask a British company about theirs and they send you two sales guys to sing its praises and entice you to sign a contract. Ask a German company and they send a couple of engineers who say “where do you want us to install it”!

What the difference between 212 cd and 212 cd e? Other than Norway getting 212 cd and Netherland 212 cd e.

I have heard this sub is one of the few being considered for Canada as well.

navies around the world could do with a slightly larger variant of the Type 212 CD & 218A class of submarines . . . designed & built by thyssenkrupp Marine since the 1990s . . . for e.g. a fleet of 10 brand new Type 212 CD class 6, 893 ton (8, 202 ton loaded) stealth guided missile fast attack submarine powered by cutting edge iSMARTFuelCell Integrated e-AIP marine propulsion system . . .

I'm reading Karl Doenitz, memoir. Interesting how a weapon system can change over time, if the Kreigsmarine had a few of those subs in 1942, they would have von de var, vith ot a dout.

Well i hipe they buy our german subs because of pride and it would be good because then the Chance of more user and more for the german navy gets bigger but saab's offer also is very interessting. Maybe a hybrid would be the best that won't be happening right.
And barracuda is well barracuda 🤷 no idea what to say to it

Is there an option for Vertical Launch System? That would be super cool. Look at Koreans.

A year later and this thing comes across my timeline. And the clickbait title is wrong... Type 212 CD E is not chosen.

Interesting, but It seems to be much better the s80+ class

The Barracuda could be a better match bc it is bigger and can therefore carry more weapons. Possibly longer range.
