9 Things You Can Take From A Cruise Without Getting Into Trouble

What can you take home from your cruise without any fear you're doing the wrong thing, either morally or legally? This question hit me while I was packing at the end of a recent Cunard Queen Anne Cruise, as in the disembarkation letter a section was highlighted with a list of items that I was not allowed to take home, warning that if I did there would be penalties. I did a double take, as it included items I often take home from a cruise. It got me questioning what we can take from a cruise these days without any fear of getting into trouble.

I took home an additional 10 lbs of fat from my last cruise. The cruise line didn't seem to mind.

Hi Gary, Avram here. I rarely leave comments but this video deserves one.

This past January Tina and I took our first ocean Viking cruise on the Jupiter and we were surprised to find within our cabin a welcome folder containing a one-page list of every accessory in the room and it's price, should we wish to purchase a wine glass, table tray, robe, towel, tissue box container and everything else not fixed to the walls and floor. The prices per item were exorbitant and of course, we never would have bought them or even considered taking them.

But at the bottom of this "catalog" price list was a message in fine print that warned us, if any of the items listed above were missing after we checked out of the room we would be charged those crazy prices, as in, $100 for water glass. We were astounded. We've had over 20 cruises on eight cruise lines and this is the first time we've ever encountered a message that says, "Don't steal anything from the room...or ESLE!"

This warning has something to say about the clientele that Viking draws as their passengers and now that I'm viewing your Queen Anne video. it's apparent that even Cunard is experiencing theft on their ships. I'm not sure if this means that some people have a sense of entitlement to take what they think they bought when buying a cruise or they feel they can gain some kind of discount that they deserve by stealing something from their cabins. For whatever reasons, the world is changing Gary, and sadly very quickly. (Or maybe it's always been this way and now the cruise lines are taking a stand.) Maybe you know.

LOVE your cruise lectures and videos!

I liked HAL's approach of writing in the daily guide that the price of the robes is X and if you choose to buy the one in your cabin by taking it with you, they'll happily add that cost to your room account!

Now when you travel you should bring those 3 ounce travel-size containers. Empty. Then fill them up with the body wash, conditioner or lotion.

I’m rather disappointed to see so many people stealing things. Come on - show more class!

I also take home the daily programs. Some say it wierd but, I also love looking back on what we had done.

The only thing I ever take is the memories.

Here's what I can take off and no cruise line can stop me. My new tan. My weight gain from eating too much. My ALT levels from drinking too much. All the souvenirs I did not purchase on the ship. My satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the ship, the crew and the cruise experience. My dirty laundry. Myself.

I haven't seen paper and pens on a ship in years. I miss it (and the chocolates)

Love the new editing addition with the words embedded in to video on the ships hull, etc. Very clever and surprising. Your videos are always top notch.

For me, most of the stuff you mentioned you can and do take home, is junk and clutter.

On a recent Disney Cruise, I heard about these velcro cable ties that everybody raves about, so I asked my cabin attendant for a few. He left me a full pack of 100! 😱 I took out five and gave him back the rest.

The only thing Gary has ever stolen is the hearts of all his fans! 🙂

I only take photos and memories and I leave behind a big tip for our wonderful cabin stewards.

Great video, Gary - I'm so relieved to hear I'm not the only one that likes to see what I can benefit from at the end of a cruise...

Those little cable tidies from Windstar are absolutely GENIUS - I've never seen a cabin steward use them on a cruise before, but I LOVE them!

What a good video. Some of these I've definitely never thought of before.

My HAL tiles are coasters in my family room. They perfectly match the decor!

The other advantage of keeping your key card is they are excellent references for your past cruises as they include the cruise line, date of cruise, cabin number and destination.
