Look around you. Underlying every aspect of the world is a language that we all know, though our use and expertise may vary. This language, mathematics, can be used to describe everything from the proliferation of waves through a medium to how many seeds will fit on a sunflower. The harder scientists look at the natural world, the more they find it can be described with mathematics.

Maths only works as long as nothing get's in the way. If something gets in the way then you gotta fall back to probability. If the probability you're using can predict the lotto numbers then you're onto something. Faute de ça, take a number and wait for your budget allocation like everybody else.
