I wouldn't mind at all as long as the ball price matches what it was 20 years ago.

A question i have that hasn’t been addressed anywhere that Ive seen, why would this proposed “local rule” affect the non-tour ball market? I dont see TopFlite or Nitro or <insert brand of cheap ball> rolling back their golf ball. Does that market segment care that their ball isnt for use on tour? Even in the mid price segment, I cant see most people really caring and non tour ball sales continuing as before. Maybe Im missing something.

Would be interesting to see you try a Titleist Professional 90 or Titleist Tour Balata.

If the difference is only around 10 - 15 yards the top pros will soon get that back by getting stronger and faster. This is not the solution IMO. They need to tighten up the courses, make the rough more penal etc in the areas to which the long guys hit it, widen out for the short hitters and us mortals. Remove the driver as a realistic option. If they can hit it 350 onto a 10p coin, good for them, but if they spray it, punish them properly so that par becomes a good score. IMO. Great video! 👍

I'm fine with tour pros using restricted balls but definitely not club golfers. I certainly don't want to lose distance as its hard enough to start with.

Let's not forget that John Daily made it to the green in two on the 635 yard par 5 1993 us open, after driving 320 from the tee...
That's a 20 year old ball and 20 year old clubs...

20 year old balls are going to loose their compression as they will harden and also the mantles will go more brittle... more so if they were ones that had come out of a lake etc... if you had a brand new 20 year old ball that had been kept at optimum temps then it may have been a fair test, but this isnt very scientific.. you should have found a new ball that has the same compression characteristics as the proposal (sure there will be some out there already!)

I like the idea of rolling the balls back for the pros. I want to see the courses played as intended when originally designed. I am more impressed with a guy working a 4 iron to a pin than a 8 iron.

I really don't mind, it's just for the pros. I can barely hit the ball 250 with a pro v1 where some pros can hit 400, the ability to preserve the golf courses that can't update to the long hitters is worth watching the pros hit it a little bit shorter

I really don't mind regulating the ball distance. Long hitters will still outdrive the others and golf courses can stop digging up tree's to lengthen the course.

7:40 Interesting comparison to F1 Racing, they drive different cars (clubs) but use control tyres (golf balls) with slicks, semi-wet and wet tyres (different compression or spin profiles). It could be a good approach to the rollback for pro golf.

Get, if you can, a couple of Titleist Balata balls. Played them 30 years ago. Thats what I would call winding the ball back.

How much of an effect does age have on a ball, not sure if time has any effect on the materials…..but time has affected me. 20 years ago i hit 300 yd drives with old woods and balls, now i hit it 225 with new woods and balls but 59 yr old muscles

I’m 63 and I’ve played low handicap golf since the 1970’s. I hit the ball farther as a senior player than I have in my life. Balls definitely need to be reeled in by 10% or so.

I wander if Iron lofts will go back to traditional and no need for a gap wedge lol

I don't mind tour pros using these balls (albeit the ball they use won't actually be 20 years old). It makes the courses they play still relevant without having to spend millions re designing golf courses as well as making them less sustainable and more expensive to look after.

There is no distance problem other than dumb American based course architects who are desperate to host an elite tournament on their course and build an unplayble (for the average joe and more) 8000+ yard course.

Here's another way to look at it. Tour pros have a limited ball for tournament play. The rest of us play with a regular ball. But we can play with the limited ball if we wish, and I've an idea that in time, the limited ball becomes an ego/status thing.

Most club golfers and certainly as we age and lose distance we need the ball to be rolled forward not back, might help a bit a lot of slow play too!

It would be interesting to have The Average golfer do a side by side comparison along with you two. Will there be as much or more difference between the balls with a slower swing speed?
