The numbers speak for themselves. As for the surge argument, it's true. However, not all ride share companies do surge. However keep in mind with Taxi the rate constantly increases: every 1/4 mile, every red light, every time the driver taps the brake etc. With Uber even if you get stuck in traffic it's the same rate. Even if there is a detour it's the same rate (if it's a major detour they may add 1 or 2$ extra). That's what makes them better.

Not to mention you ride enough and you get discounts like 50% off all rides

somewhat negligible price difference, but i suppose that's still a good thing for Uber

Pfff this is NYC you're talking about, Subway is the way to go. Only costs you $2.75 and you have access to all trains in all directions.
