contour roam 2 mic mod (external microphone)

a quick how to on how i did my contour roam 2 microphone mod "easier than it looks and very effective" ...check out my other videos to see the results (no before footage made) but if your thinking of doing this mod you probably already have the before footage :P

cheers i used a mic from a motorcycle PTT system which is only because it had a flat velcro side for ease of mounting but any sort of mic would work (except stereo) try searching for lapel mics they usually have long cords with a foam wind canceller as well as a crocodile clip so you could mount the mic on the sun visor or trim of the dash. hope this helps

Watched this, then did it on my old Contour 1080HD. Couldn’t believe it actually worked. Generic lapel mic—sounds great. Had to poke a little hole in the rubbery housing down at the bottom, as my old Contour’s plastic case had no convenient hole in the side. At first, I patched the wires in reverse—positive to negative and vis-versa—and that didn’t work—but I took it apart again w/ the jeweler’s Phillips-head, redid it, and boom—works. Ride down the road talking into my helmet, and just about nobody looks at me like I’m some sort of freak—at least not much more than they already did.

Thanks for the vid, got my Roam 2 recently and was happy with everything but the mic. Will wait a month or two and then likely install a jack using the info gained from your vid.

Cheers mate. I'm just tired of seeing people with GoPros at music festivals recording when the audio comes out as totally blown up and unlistenable. Since the Contour+2 has an external Mic Jack I figure it would increase the quality of the audio if I stick a professional quality Mic to it. (Now to research mics!)

I'm an avid festival goer, so I like being able to record the audio to playback later with the video.

The crowds are never the issue. It's the decibels from the giant stack of speakers at the concert being far too loud for the built-in mic to pick up so all you hear is blown up garbled noise. I've enjoyed your videos and I've done research on the camera and it seems to be the best bang for the buck in what I'm looking for.

Camcorders are a bit of a pain to bring into any venue here in the USA and often not allowed. Contour I could sneak in easily...

I finally got the balls to try it and it works well, thank you so much. I always wanted a in helmet mic but didnt want to pay for a new camera, I love my contour roam 2 and now i can be heard when I talk

no probs and yea i hear ya mate its more of a fashion statement for some people but they do have the best picture quality and yea the contours with the external mic adaptors are pretty clear especially when you get a good mic...maybe a little shotgun mic would hear better over the crowds? i have a telescopic monopod and pistol grip for my contour for a few shows as they come with camera mounts but ive also got a camcorder just for shows and stuff that does stereo recording and amazing zoom shots

thanks :) hay mate sorry for the late reply...yea any mic will do really a lepel mic the little ones with the clip are easiest to get hold of and yea you could remove the on/off if you wanted unless you wanted to record with no audio and insert your own at any point :) hope this helps

is it possible to hardwire a 3.5mm mic jack? reason is i use a 6 ft long 3.5mm mic jack to run through the trunk of my car with a mic mounted on the rear bumper....will this work as well?

I have this camera, has the red + black outputs.

Took apart my lapel mic and it has a full copper wiring. How do I resolve this?
