It makes you wonder how many tricks like this have been lost in time. Thousands of years ago people traveled and explored with nothing but the sun and stars to guide them. Now there’s people that can’t find their way to a grocery store in their town without gps.

Simple enough so i showed the grandkids. Thanks. The sunrise system is a version i taught the also.
At sunrise you stand with your right shoulder with your right arm point at the sunrise. Then your left arm will be pointing West when you spell <WE>. West is left arm/shoulder, right is east arm/shoulder. You are facing North, butt is pointing south. Works on overcast days. JMHO

I believe this is in one of the really old old army survival manuals. We used to do this when we were kids. Also, at night if you can locate the Big Dipper, follow the lip edge of the spoon straight out to find Polaris (North Star).

I lived on a mining claim in Northern California growing up. Dad taught me to always go downhill when you are lost. When you go downhill, you will come to water. Then go downstream. You will eventually get to something familiar. It always worked for me. I was lost a lot, but it wasn't a big deal.
