Degrassi: The Next Generation, a dramatic sequel from the producer of the award-winning Degrassi series of the 1980s-- Kids of Degrassi Street, Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High. Degrassi: The Next Generation continues the core spirit of the previous Degrassi series. It tells its youthful viewers: you are not alone. It’s been a decade since the gang at Degrassi High graduated, so naturally it’s time for a reunion. That’s the premise and launching point for Degrassi: The Next Generation. Joey (Pat Mastroianni), Caitlin (Stacie Mistysyn), Snake (Stefan Brogren), and Lucy (Anais Granofsky) return for a special one-hour kick-off to the series. Returning to Degrassi for the reunion, they are reunited with Spike (Amanda Stepto) and her daughter, Emma (Miriam McDonald). Now twelve years old, Emma is entering a new phase of her life-- Grade 7 at the newly refurbished Degrassi Community School. Emma is joined at Degrassi by her “next generation” classmates, Manny (Cassie Steele), Toby (Jake Goldsbie), J.T. (Ryan Cooley), Liberty (Sarah Barrable-Tishauer), Sean (Daniel Clark), Ashley (Melissa McIntyre), Paige (Lauren Collins), Terri (Christina Schmidt), Spinner (Shane Kippel) and Jimmy (Aubrey Graham). There, they encounter the same pressures, temptations and accomplishments as their parents did before them. But it’s a whole new environment confronting them, one filled with the Internet, body piercing and hip-hop. These kids may be more media savvy than their parents, but they aren’t necessarily more sophisticated. The timeless issues of growing up remain the same. Kids in junior high are at amazing stage in their lives: one moment they’re secretly cruising pornographic sites on the web; the next, they’re crying over the loss of their favourite stuffed toy. Degrassi: The Next Generation is a topical and entertaining series that captures this unique world of today’s child/adult on television and online. In a real world without pat solutions, our characters deal with the big and little challenges of becoming an adult.
