As much as I like his drumming I swear I'm checking out that damn painting behind him. If I were him I would try to stuff that up in my shirt on the way out. No one would ever know. Cheers!

You know - the other part of what he said is "that's always something I'm channeling" I totally hear it in his playing. He is a super funky drummer.

00:34 thru 00:37 and 3:08 thu 3:17 Does anyone know if there is a name for this type of exercise? I wonder if Carlock learned the circular, arm lift movement exercise from Ed Soph? Ed Soph taught me the basic version of this in the early 1980s. Looks like Carlock has brought the exercise to an advanced level. If I recall correctly Soph called the exercise "Windmills." But it may be called something else or have no name at all. Carlock may have learned it from Jay Wanamaker too. I think it came from George Lawrence Stone (and others before that?). I have used it as a daily warm up because it quickly activates all the muscles from the back to shoulders, biceps, elbows, forearms, wrists and finally, fingers. This movement appears to be fundamentally key to Carlocks' playing. In the picture on the cover of Ted reeds book, "Syncopation" the drummer (Reed?) appears to be playing "Windmills." It is a profoundly effective exercise.
