Animated Steam locomotive linkage system

This video shows working principle of a Walschaerts valve gear. The gear system is superimposed on a modified version of a Hudson type locomotive. You will observe how the direction of locomotive by using reach rod.

This is the best video and explanation of the Walschaerts valve gear I have seen. The reach rod is also known as the reverser mechanism, the position of which shows up on a scale located near the driver so he can see the amount of cut off when economizing on steam usage.

Unlike an automobile engine or a diesel locomotive, you are getting power to the driving wheels from reciprocation of the piston in both directions in a steam locomotive. Both strokes are power strokes.

Great, thank you! A suggestion is to put up graphs that show the pressure curves etc. as the valves move. The analysis walchaerts did to get these levers timing and travel and cylinder size just right are quite mathematical I’m sure.
