Top 10 Worst Homelands Cards (One of the Worst Sets Ever)

preview_player
Показать описание
Homelands is the seventh expansion released for Magic the Gathering, and to this day, remains one of the worst sets ever released. Not only are there not many interesting or fun cards in the set, there are few to no good cards in the set. Every creature is understatted, every spell weak and unimpactful. However, we’re only trying to go over the absolute bottom of the barrel from this already bottom of the barrel set.

You know what I learned the most from this? Poor Amy Weber has her name/artwork all over some of the worst cards of all time!

A TCG player of YuGiOh and MTG once told me that in their early years, MTG and YGO had the opposite approach to their complicated mechanics: YGO had complicated mechanics to make their cards extremely good, while MTG had complicated mechanics to make their cards extremely bad. It was a funny explanation that stuck out to me and I was reminded of in this video.

Prophecy has one good thing on it. The art, it shows Ishan. One of the most interesting lore villains in magics history on the small scale. Honestly, I would love to see magic do more with Baron Sengir and Ishan and the rest of Clan Sengir. Edward is great and all, but Baron feels like a true vampire overlord.

For Leeches, it's been stated that removing poison counters was a mistake as it made it no different than the life point system the game had. Even if Leeches wasn't a reserved list card, it still won't get printed.
If you ask me, Leeches should've been an instant with 1 mana and split second. Then Poison decks would struggle a bit if dominant.
And man, it stinks when the worst card in the set costs 1 mana. and you know it's bad when at 16:48, there's a chuckle regarding such effects.

Regarding the best card that's not reserved in Homelands, by price, it's Merchant Scroll.

If you look at prophecy as a 1 mana draw a card, it becomes a filter card in white. Considering that, it's better than joven's tools

keep in the cuts of stuff like 16:45. It's hilarious. First out-loud laugh I've had all day.

When I first started playing in 1996, the hobby store I was told to go to was going out of business and was sold out of 4th and Ice Age, so all I could get were Homelands, Fallen Empires, Chronicles, and Alliances. The only lands I had to build a deck with were any non-basics I pulled from those packs. My buddy is like "what's wrong with you?" He gave me a bunch of basics the next day.

With regards to Joven's tools, another aspect on why it sucks, is that in very casual Magic games, some of my classmates ran some wall creatures. If nothing else, Walls were decently stated for their time (i.e Wall of Swords is a 4 mana 3/5 flier) and were pretty good for players who can't spend too much to grab the A tier cards. In situations like that, the Tools even lose more of their use. It's annoying if your opponent has something like Wall of Ice (it's just a 0/7 wall) sitting around and you cant send in your attacker that would most likely have less power than 7

Now, I'm surprised with several cards NOT making this list like Marjhan and Veldrane of Sengir... but I guess narrowing the horrid cards from that set to 10 is already a difficult task.

When I saw a Tools card, I was immediately like "wait, aren't there a land card that does the same for same amount?" Really shows how overcosted certain effects were at the start, when someone thought that "duh, this is an artifact, better slap some extra mana in that CMC so it wouldn't be overpowered" was a good idea.

I love the "Which word will he mispronounce this video."

Matron was the winner this day.

I do honestly think prophecy is not the worst card. Its very, very, very bad, however I rather flush my deck with 4 prophecy's than a single dwarven sea clan, since prophecy cantrips and thus replaces itself, for the low cost of one mana. Its not great when a cards main upside is how easy it is to replace, however it is not that bad. (also it could be used as a cantrip in a Roil shaper commander deck thats all about spell spamm and it would not be out of place.

I think you misread Prophecy as it ALWAYS draws a card next turn as its a separate effect. Still horrible but 1 mana Cantrips(Cards that replace themselves) as a whole have seen play and even been banned before. So while its one of the worst cantrips in the game, its far from #1 as unlike a lot of the cards below it it always does something good even if insanely slowly.

Its a draft/standard card effectively. As in those low power formats where good cantrips rarely exist. Having a bad Cantrip is still amazing for deck consistency especially in White(Worst generic card draw color in the game).

I remember being a new magic player that thought I should put leeches in every deck I had because I HAD to protect against poison counters

I'll be honest I'm not entirely sure Prophecy should be that high for a card that replaces itself for one mana. It's probably worse than like, Sip of Life from Ice Age but I think the gaining life aspect was probably hyperfocused on when that's not the main draw of the card.

Wait...WAIT. Do we call it "ramp" because its namesake is Rampant Growth? I always thought it was just something people came up with because your mana is increasing...like a ramp. I feel like I've just had an epiphany.

I already know "mill" comes from "Millstone", but are there any other commonly used trading card game terms whose origins come from Magic cards?

16:48 We heard that crack, Duel/ManaLogs.
All I know about Magic comes from this channel, and even I know that if someone had 10 mana to spare, just about anything would be a better option to spend it on than letting one creature attack directly.

I disagree about prophecy being #1. Even though it doesn't really do anything, you get to draw another card next turn. It replaces itself with something potentially useful. That's a lot better than having Joven's Tools stuck in your hand.
