Today we get the car ferry to Cat Ba Island located right next door to Halong Bay in Northern Vietnam.

However as it's the weekend, the weather is poor, and some unfortunate strong of events we quickly leave and go in search for better times in Haiphong City and Hanoi.

Cat Ba Island has it busy part Paddy, you missed the beautiful national park on the island. There’s a lot more to Catba than that busy resorts. You are so right about the vibe, just move on to greener fields! I was kinda thinking your sounded a bit tired in the last video. Break time, go see the girlfriend. Great video! Hey Paddy, unbelievable your footage and your experience in Cat Ba. I am a world traveler and Cat Ba has been one of my favorite places. I was planning to go next week again, but after seeing your vdo, I will make sure I am not there in the weekend. When I was there just before covid 2.5 years ago, I had a very relaxing time. I found it a very laid back town and it was 10 times cheaper and same beautiful as halong bay. I made a two night luxurious cruise in Halong bay, which was nice but expensive. In cat Ba I took two days on a row the same trip on a luxurious boat incl. biking Kayaking etc for only 25 US $( INCL LUNCH AND DRINKS). It was the best excursion deal I ever had. In the evening I had the greatest and most friendly service and good food in one of the boulevard restaurants. I was totally 100% happy in Cat Ba. Its for sure that you choose a long holiday weekend and Yes then every nice city can become a night-mare. Try a fishing village like Bangsaray/Pattaya were I live in Thailand on a holiday weekend when bangkok people escape.. Same story, a beautiful tranquil village becomes like a hell-hole. Anyway just my two cents on Cat Ba. I enjoy your travel vlogs very much and follow you. However I feel a little sorry that you did not experience Cat Ba as I did. You have to understand that if there are school holidays or long weekend people escape the city for some happy times. best rgds Hans Jungle Moon Homestay Bangsaray Thailand. Its was of the most beautiful areas in the world its me saying that having experienced expedition cruises in Antartica, Galapagos Islands and most other corners in the world, like Bhutan, Tibet etc etc. Cat Ba is beautiful !!!!

I think the local was trying to say that you need a motorbike license because most tourist believe a valid drivers license is accepted. You can drive a car with a regular license but you can’t ride a motorbike unless you have the proper license from your home country. You didn’t specify which one you had, but it’s a very common misconception tourist have. You also need an international drivers license stating you can drive a motorbike, it’s usually a paper.

I'm pretty convinced that the not vibing with Cat Ba had nothing to do with the island itself, but with being tired, hungry and being unfortunate having to deal with the vietnamese tourists. Cat Ba is a quiet, authentic version of Halong Bay. I hope you get back there someday. And don't focus too much on the town (like you did also in Sapa).

My Cat Ba experience was different I wasn't in the main town, I was on a hotel on a smaller island. Was amazing actually. But hey that's the beauty of travel, different sensations for different people at different parts of the year...it happens. Great vid Paddy mate 👌

Paddy, such a pity you missed the beautiful national park in the kids of the island. It’s great for hiking👍 you could have also visited Hospital Cave- an amazing relic from the war. There’s more to Catba than that noisy resort town
