I just got this for Christmas, was messing with it on and off for a few hours. While on the phone started spinning it in the air, landed in my lap in 2 pieces to my surprise 😂

I solved it by dropping it on the floor

I gave up on this puzzle a while back - I just couldn't figure it out - I'm happy to know the solution now. Honestly, I am more thrilled by the brilliant design of the puzzle than anything else. Really incredible. I'd love to have a box that locks based on this design (maybe along 3 axis instead of 2...).

It’s great! I solved it myself as well.
Kinda boring when you finally know how it’s done, but fun to see others squirm when they’re trying to solve it. 😁

I used a different method to solve it. Once I saw the pegs shedding some light on the spaces between the two pieces, I cut four sheets of paper and carefully put them in the four spaces. I love the real solution, hehe, but it is good to know that problems do not have a single preset answer, with imagination you can solve anything by following infinite paths.

Once it’s open you realize it can also be solved by tipping it North up (South down), then South up (North down), gently rotating it, and doing the same on the other end. Since the flip side is different, it’s essentially raising N, S, E, W. I believe there are two effective solutions. Spinning is easiest, but to keep the integrity of the theme, either way works fine.
The insert in the box says Hanayama conceived this when he was 19, and although he doesn’t give hints, the “keyword is needle.” At first I thought needle was the starting point, so I tried having the compass pointed North. The keyword does absolutely nothing to help figure it out. I now wonder what the purpose for giving it is.
Fun puzzle. It’s a bummer that each one I’ve solved has always been by accident. I wish for the more difficult puzzles they’d include a riddle as a hint. It would still keep it interesting in the cases where the puzzles are solved by accident.

I looked this up to put back together lol. I just peeked into the gaps and tried to tip the bars into sections of all four directions, adding pressure to the 'n' for example to prevent the north pipe from falling out when I tipped the pipe back into 's' and after a while it worked. Didn't know it was magnets till after. Still count this as a solve.

I think that if you jold the individual pieces upside down, there is a ball barring on the inside the prevents the pins from retracting fully. Flipping them makes the ball barring fall down and cleares the path for the pins to move freely

Solved the nutcase in about 20 mins, I struggled with this one for several hours. Using a flash light, I saw the pins holding it. So I just kept doing small turns and flipping flat again. While watching TV, I noticed it was a bit looser on one side. I just kept wiggling it and suddenly it opened! I studied it for a bit and didn't want to put it back together because I didn't see an easy way to open it again. Centrifugal force! I should have known after seeing it open.

I just solved this one today after playing with it for a week or so on and off. Really nice little puzzle had me scratching my head for a while.

Awesome thanks. I just solved it. Bought it today. I didn’t spin it though I just rotated it in my hands and flipped it. I used a flashlight to try and see in the crack as to how it worked. Spinning it is clever lol.

I had to look up a video just because I thought mine was broken. I had it solved about 30 seconds after getting it out of the package.

I assumed it was a spin but it didn't work after the first few so i had to confirm with the vid, just took me a few tries but I'm glad i got it right! Thanks for the help!

I've been stuck on this for years!!! I finally just started using is as a fidget spinner since I figured it was impossible and it came apart.

I looked this up to see how to start it as soon as I saw the first spin I started with that and paused it. One spin flat didnt work for me but if you stand up and spin it so it falls down it works almost everytime.

I accidentally solved it by just flipping it in the air a bunch.

Is this supposed to be solved like this? I figured it out by tilting each pin in and adding some tension so it stayed in, then flipping it and doing the other 2.
