Level Up - Bulgarian Empire

Here's yet another European empire to add to the series. Today I present "Level Up - Bulgarian Empire". See the history of the nation from its nomadic Turkic origins, to its gradual conquering of the Balkan Peninsula, and finally to the modern republic that exists today.

Also, when I originally made "Level Up - Ottoman Empire" (the first one I made), I never imagined I'd eventually make 40 Level Up videos. It's interesting how things go.

The greatest obstacle to the empire's revival was the presence to the south ofthe Danube of the Bulgar khaganate with its capital at Pliska and a southern frontier in the Hebros/Maritza valley only three days march from Constantinople. In 780 the Bulgar state had survived in close proximity to Byzantium for almost a century, taking advantage of the empire's internal problems and wars against the Arabs, and this survival had hardened it into an extremely tough political entity. Its Turkic ruling elite combined the military ferocity of the steppe people they had been with the agricultural resource base of the Slav peasantry they dominated and with the skills of civilization acquired from Greek traders, captives, and defectors.

As a consequence, groups of the Cumans and the Tatars settled and mingled with the local population in various regions of the Balkans. The Cumans were the founders of three successive Bulgarian dynasties (Asenids, Terterids and Shishmanids) and the Wallachian dynasty (Basarabids). They also played an active role in Byzantium, Hungary and Serbia, with Cuman immigrants being integrated into each country's elite.

Great video honestly man, although I feel like it would've been better to give it some more time instead of rushing through some stuff like the Golden Age and the Decline of the FBE overall I really liked it and was honestly wishing for one done for my country after watching your channel for years.


Also like the accuracy of the borders, they're pretty neat give or take but this is among the most accurate showing of them.

The Seven Slavic tribes, together with other Slavic and non-Slavic tribes of the Bulgarian Empire, gradually formed the Bulgarian ethnicity in the 9th century due to the Christianization of Bulgaria under Boris I and the preceding administrative reforms that deprived them of their autonomy and self-government through the Comitatus.
The Asparuh's Bulgars, who were not numerous, settled in the Balkans with a single migration wave, which Michael the Syrian described as numbering 10, 000.[3] Therefore, they gradually were assimilated into the Slavic culture, until by the 10th century they had adopted the Slavic language, with the Bulgar language going extinct in the kingdom.[4]

Further evidence linking the Balkan Bulgar state to Turkic cultural traditions was the nature of the Bulgars' primary settlement at Pliska, with its resemblance to a steppe encampment, and a Bulgar tradition of stone relief carvings and inscriptions found scattered throughout the eastern Danubian Plain.

Turkic and Jewish genealogical myths recorded by King Joseph and Sefer Yosippon identified Khazar as the "brother" of other Turkic tribes like the Bulgars and Sabirs (see below). Syriac legends said that the ancestor of the Khazars was named "Khazarig, " the brother of "Bulgarios." Most scholars believe that these legends have a historical basis and that the Khazars were indeed closely related to Turkic tribes such as the Bulgars and Bashkirs.
