Thank you so much. Even someone who is as technically klutzy as I was able to follow your clear, simple instructions and successfully connect the DVD player!

Thank you so much for this very clear explanation. I was getting a black and white picture from my DVD player to the TV. I discovered from your video that I needed to hook up tri-colored component cable jacks, in addition to the L & R audio cable (with an attached yellow video cable - now not connected). Very clear picture now and I didn't need to buy a thing!

Hi Tina. (What is the model # of the Samsung?) One of the easiest ways to connect DISH network to a Samsung surround sound is by using a "Digital Optical Toslink Audio only connection cable". You "can" use HDMI but you don't need to use HDMI. Toslink, it sounds like, would be the easiest way to make the connect you are asking about. Visit our website. On the left look for "Connection cables" and find DIGITAL OPTICAL TOSLINK.

An HDMI cable and a Component cable (component cabling having 5 RCA connectors on both ends of the wires as opposed to only 3 RCA connectors) perform the same function. HDMI is digital. Component is analog yet both can transmit a resolution up to High Definition resolution so long as both the DVD is a HighDef DVD/Blur-Ray and so long as the TV is also a HighDef TV

Can you listen to the DVD player while watching a channel on the TV? In other words can I mute the sound while watching a movie and have the music from the DVD playing?
