Christal: Lion and the Lamb (drum cover)

While I dig progressive music as much as the next person*, truth is, the bulk of my playing is still church music. That's where I really started drumming (and was told so, so many times to hit harder).

Was in the studio a few days back tracking some drums for band #1 (Efficient Public Transport) and had everything set up, so I did a quick cover of this track we've released at church lately. It's an unusually rhythm-centred one for a worship song; that was a challenge to stay in time. Hope this helps someone trying to learn the part!

That said, please stick around, more prog metal covers are en route sometime soon. I promise!

Hi Christal I can’t thank you enough for this tutorial. I am one of 3 drummers on the worship team in a mid sized church. I had been playing for many years at other churches, but was locked into an older tamer folksy gospel style of playing……certainly not contemporary. I’ve played about 7 times over the last year, and each time knew i didn’t please the worship leader. ( of course he was nice, maybe too nice. I’m 68, have had a lot of experience…so i knew my feel was not jiving, but was blind to exactly what was wrong. So i was kinda in a crisis of the mind…. I’ve got experience, good band team skills, chops, but at my age was wondering if my time to play was over) So this was one of the songs, and has a clear recognizable beat…… fakeable but not “right” and a much younger WL would know it immediately. Anyway after trying several youtube tutorials i found yours! It took the better part of a week to get consistent with the feel, but by Sat night around 1:30 am i felt “ pretty good” about it. A few hours later i played and the WL was clearly in shock. thanks to you i broke that inauthentic fuddy duddy style of playing ( for todays contemporary sound). What made the differences in your tutorial was 1. somehow you removed the drums from the mix so your playing was perfectly clear. How do you do that? 2. good video angle for visual. 3. words and comments .
Finally, i still have ways to go ….with other songs…. but this was a “style” breakthrough that i can transfer to other songs. You were an answer to much prayer ( and sadness) This old drummer now has the confidence to play just a little longer before it’s time to hang up my sticks ❤️

Awesome drumming Christal, and not a bad tune either! Your playing was really rhythmically consistent... sounded very worthy of the studio. Perhaps you were in the studio mode that day since you mentioned you were actually tracking drums that day.
I look forward to more of your "edgier" tunes as well! ;)

If you can Christal, I wonder if you could do a drum cover of My Soul Longs for You by Jesus Culture from their album Come Away. I would love to see you play it.

Jesus is our Lord and savior!

Great video! Can you cover more good Christian songs? And can you also cover more difficult songs by progressive bands? Thanks!
