I was working in a tennis pro shop about 30 years ago, and I'm still involved with the tennis/racquet retail market (but just as a stringer now). The biggest difference I see is racquet length, head size and as you mentioned, racquet balance. Pretty hard to find an extremely head heavy balanced racquet anymore. The materials and stiffness are pretty much the same. But the biggest changes is in string technology, not really racquet tech. Good video!!

Kids started to get interested in tennis and I broke out my Wilson 110 Pro staff elite with PWS. This brings back memories

Great video. Just got back after a 10 year lay off and still have my hammers and pro staff from the 90s that I’m reluctant to give up.

Last week I bought a Hammer 6.2 (95 in) at auction for $4. I put a new grip on and it plays great. It has relatively new strings so right off the bat I was hitting some beautiful shots that made me think the racquet came with some magic. This may be the best $7 I ever spent.

My favorite racquet is still my 25 yr old Dunlop Revelation although I've moved on to Blade 18, 20

i dug up and restrung my hammer 4.0 when i started playing again a year ago. it caused very uncomfortable tingling in my hand afterwards that lasted for days. it's the only one of my racquets that does that.

TY this is so helpful as my wife is using the hammer still! And I was thinking of upgrading her - that hammer is definitely heavy.

Obrigado, excelente trabalho para nós, existem raquetes antigas por vezes excelentes! In today I play with Hammer 4.4 I like but now I look a Prince ATS tour 100 310gr or similar!

I think there is definitely a market for a Wilson Hammer like racket today. Probably mostly in the high school demographic and those who want a racket to mess around with once in a while. Back in high school I really enjoyed my Prince Thunder Cloud Titanium I was jealous of my doubles partner's Wilson Hammer 6.2.

Newer racquets have higher twistweight to provide more arm comfort and health to the light racquets today and I think that's an improvement.

I have quite a few rackets, but my favourites always come back to a relatively narrow range of specs. All racket specs are a compromise, there's no such thing as perfect for every aspect of the game, particularly serving vs groundstrokes vs volleying. The Hammers felt great on the serve with that swingweight in behind the ball, but that head heaviness made them slow to manoeuvre.

My friends and I all wanted a Hammer. They were so hyped up for their power.

Measured even balance spec for standard length racquets is 34.3cm. What exactly do you define as head heavy or head light? Is there an agreed industry definition on this? What balance point suits which players in general? Have balance points evolved with time? Interesting questions for a subsequent video, perhaps?

Because some scales will give you a different reading depending on where the weight is placed on the pad, you should make it a habit of weighing rackets by standing them vertically on their butt caps in the center of the pad.
Also the title of the vid should have been how some Wilson rackets have changed in the past 30 years. Hammer balanced rackets represented only a small portion of the Wilson racket lineup and even a much smaller portion of the overall market 30 years ago. Most rackets were between 11.5 and 12.5. with headlight balances.
I’d say that Wilson’s popularity stemmed more from its popularity amongst many top professional players back then and not Hammers. Particularly because so many top stars used the original Prostaff 6.1 a traditional weighted and balanced racket.
