Mice plague causes fire that destroyed NSW family's home

Sky News host Paul Murray has spoken to Aged Care Nurse and mother Rebekah Ward about a tragedy that saw Ms Ward and her family lose their home to a fire caused by the mice plague afflicting regional New South Wales.

The fire was caused by faulty wiring in the home caused by the multitude of mice - residing in the roof of the property - chewing through them.

"We didn't save anything," Ms Ward said.

Ms Ward said thankfully her kids were outside when the fire occurred and they would be starting counselling next week as a result of the ordeal.

"No child should have to watch their possessions burn," she said.

What happened, I thought PETA was going to read bed time stories to the mice so they can go to sleep and then transfer them to their own island to live happily ever after.
On a serious note, I feel bad for these people.

I had a rodent problem years ago and got rid of them with electrical traps, ..get a piece of metal plate, 4x8 ft attach electrical cables to it, put bait on it and when it's covered with mice throw the switch, it works and there is no secondary poisoning. A 12volt battery will work but an AC welder is better. They sell battery powered ones for home owners they run on 4D batteries.

I remember yrs ago they had a mouse explosion in NSW they said it was due to the rains they were having, they had the same weather this yr too....hope they can rebuild....

A horrendous loss after what must have been a nightmarish time since the beginning of the plague! The trauma is not measurable in monetary terms. Not wishing anyone to go through this catastrophe. God bless

Happens all the time. A colony explosion only to collapse upon itself when the food source is depleted. At about the 3rd cycle it collapses every single time.

We have plenty of stray cats around our house. We feed them, we even take them to the vet for spaying and when they're sick. We have no mice or rat problem here. Just the smell of cats will keep the rodents away.
