Activities (Silly Putty)

Hello Everybody,

In this video, I present something familiar! A toy many of us grew up with. At least in the USA. It's a miracle of accidental chemistry results... it's Silly Putty. Which I've learned is not actually a solid but a non-newtonian liquid. You can learn more about chemistry at your local library.

The package no longer holds the promise that you can copy a picture from the comics and then stretch and otherwise mangle it. I'm beginning to believe that either the putty or the printing industry have changed significantly enough for this to no longer work. Ah well, say "lavee."

the reason it didnt work was because it is laminated but you can use newspaper

Ordered multiple puttys, and every single one has been nearly rock hard and you cant do crap with it. Ended up here because I needed a reference point to tell if I actually had super duper hand strength as a child or are just now consistently receiving old stock.

I got some today at dollar tree. This stuff is awesome. I was wondering if the ingredients were toxic or if it has changed.

4 cups water
1 tbsp Borax
Stir
Pour PVA glue in, stir. Remove glue and squeeze with hands for a few minutes. Voila. Unlimited silly putty. Add food coloring to the glue before pouring if desired.

Can't believe that didn't work. It always worked with comic strips from the Sunday comics. Maybe the chemicals has changed.

I remember this as a kid fold it stretch it pull it crack it pull it pop it other cool thing could put on a comic book press it down and copy it awesome classic toy 👍🏻❤️👏🏻🤗😋❤️👍🏻

You forgot to fold it over to create an air bubble, then squeeze it to make it pop, it was always fun trying to make the loudest pop

If your Silly Putty isn't picking up ink, it's likely because the ink you're trying to transfer is a type that is too dry or not oil-based, as Silly Putty primarily picks up oil-based inks, like the ones commonly used in newspapers, which are considered "wet" inks compared to the drier inks found in magazines or printed documents; essentially, the ink needs to have a slightly oily component for the Silly Putty to effectively lift it.

When you press the putty on a comic, maybe you should buy one that kind of has the letters popping out just a little tiny bit. I t worked for me before.

I'm thinking it doesn't pick up comics anymore b/c you can't be sure if the ink used is toxic or not. Since it is sold as non-toxic....you'd want to keep it as such or risk a law suit. Law suits dictate what we can and cannot do to the extreme!
