All I know about the Illyrians is that they gave Rome a lot of headaches.

Not a single word on the Great Illyrian Revolt at the same time when 3 legions were massacred at Teutoburg?

Fun fact : Taulant, Dardan, illir, Ardian and Agron are still common Albanian male names
Fun fact #2 : The 90 year old Dardanian leader Bardylis (Bardhyll) means "white star" in Albanian

I think it's worth noting that Messapic, an Illyrian tribe and dialect of Illyrian has had itself decoded for decades by mostly Western linguists and they've concluded that Albanian is the only relative. There is already quite many books about it. I wouldn't that easily say that there is no known Illyrian languages to be alive. Where did Albanian language come from?

Thank you for making a documentary about Ilirians. Albanians are the only remaining authoctonous peoples group that still have preserved and use the Ilirian language customs and Names, although Ilyrian DNA is to be found from Croatia all the way to Northern Greece (Epirus). Ilir ( i lirë) in Albanian means free, referring to the free tribes inhabiting the whole Ilirian peninsula ( the concept of the Balkan Peninsula was created much later by a big blunder of the German geographer August Zeune in 1808, Balkan means 'chain of wooded mountains in Turkish). Albanians still use names as Agron, Teuta, Genti, Taulant, Afërdita, Adri-an/atik to name their children and this practice it is common. For example: the name Bardhyli ( king of Dardania, (Kosova region) means White star ( bardh-white; yll-star), many other names can be explained or broken down in their meaning by Ilyrian-Albanian embryomorphemes. Even the name of Dua Lipa has a meaning (dua - want/wish or love)

Illyricum was always very important recruiting ground for the Romans even at the end. Losing Illyricum to the Eastern Roman Empire in 395 was a major blow. Stillicho tried to somehow get it back with the help of Alaric.

Queen Teuta of the Illyrians was a force to reckon with, .meaning the Illyrian women were as formidable as the men in leadership and warfare

Taulantii tribe in greek was translated as Chelidoni which means Swallow Bird. Swallow bird in Arberesh Albanian is Tallandishe and in Albanian Dallandyshe. Also the names of the days of the week in albanian are half from the Illyrian Pantheon and half from the Roman one. 🇦🇱 love the video

How do you not know that many of the names you mentioned have meaning in Albanian? “I lire” means free. “I lire jam” means I am free. Bardhyl means white star. The strangeness of not mentioning the Albanian language connection to Illyrian is just weird and unscientific. The Albanian language is the only other big language besides Greek in the area to survive to this day. I am glad you made a clear distinction between when the Slavs arrived, as that is what happened. They came after the fall of Illyrians and had nothing to do with what happened there whatsoever.

Fantastic work, K&G! The Illyrians truly are a fascinating people. Would love to see more about the Apuli, the Messapians, or the numerous other peoples (ancient and medieval) of Southern Italy.
