Turn a basic storage trunk into a beautiful antique side table with this easy makeover project. I grabbed this trunk at a yard sale for $15 bucks and turned it into a stylish coffee table with Chalky Finish paint and a stencil from DecoArt.

Oh Mark, you are so right about the antique trunks being very expensive! This is the best job I have seen antiquing one. Love the finish. TFS...Bobbie

We have a huge old trunk we found in my in-laws basement when they passed away. It is full of stuff and the key is missing. When we were cleaning their house to put it on the market we found all kinds of hidden stuff. An antique Chinese coin bracelet, a 1000 $bill in a money belt, jewelry, Chinese embroidered tapestry, vintage collector tins, and vintage Asian manadrin collared neckline skinny dresses in heavy silk, just to mention a bit of the random stuff we found in boxes in the basement. We haven't gotten around to calling a locksmith to open the steamers chest. Who knows what is in it. We are are pretty sure it was my father in law's from when he sailed to Canada from Hong Kong in the early 1950's when he was a teenager.

Very nice looking.  We have an Army foot looker from my hubby's dad.  I think it would look great done this way!

This is great! (Again Love the technique)
I pick up trunks every time I see them on the curb. Plus I still have my college one from '88! Time to get to work.

PERFECT timing for all these chalk paint vids! For over a year I've been sitting on 5 Behr Samplers and Plaster of Paris mix, that I've been too afraid to mess up, (plus 2 other containers of "Chalkboard Paint" and Minwax Paste Wax). Then! I just picked up a couple of Folk Art's "Home Decor Ultra Matte" Acrylic Paint and their Antiquing Wax last night. So I am totally in need of these motivational projects.

Oh and...
Last month I was digging through my libraries online catalog and came across your Dummies Guide to Slipcovers and Curtains. Really? Another book of yours! Busy busy man you are! Then after renewing it two times, I still didn't want to return the book! I totally took written notes like it was 1990. I wanted to THANK YOU for all the clear information and inspiration you provided!

Even though I have sewing/serging, fabric, basic pattern making etc, totally down...I enjoyed reading ALL your great info. Man! Was I LOST on where to start when it came to creating a full slipcover from scratch. The details for measuring and yardage were a lifesaver. My beast of a couch (and recliner) shall now be tamed.

Mister Mark Montano saves the day :)

P.S.- Car Wash Curtains = Rad.

I happened to find an old trunk at Goodwill once for only $15! I think it must have belonged to someone in the military at some point, because it has "Lt. Montoya" painted on the lid. I've been meaning to find something to do with it to make it more functional and attractive. Once I move, I'm definitely going to try giving it a coat of paint and maybe splurge and get some nice fabric to line the inside with, instead of the gross, pealing newspaper it has now. This gave me some great ideas! Thanks, Mark!

I haven't seen my college trunk in about 20 years. Time to track it down so I can give this a try!

I actually loved the look of it before the blue paint was put on. It looked kind of like leather...Another fantastic project to put on my list!

You are so in my head these days! I looked at my college trunk the other night and wondered what could I do with it to make it fit my decor. It is *27* years old from my freshman year! The finish is high gloss so I know I'll have to sand it down to make the paint stick right? Thanks so much for your continued #creativity and #inspiration!
