Pure muscle car royalty, the near-mythical 1969 Camaro ZL1 was instigated by performance-oriented Chevy dealer Fred Gibb of La Harpe, Illinois.

Known internally at Chevrolet as ‘COPO 9560,’ the ZL1 was purpose-built for dragstrip dominance with the all-aluminum 427 CI powerplant derived from Jim Hall’s famous Can-Am racers at its heart. Factory-rated at 430 HP, the ZL1 mill actually exceeded 500 ponies and debuted as the most powerful engine Chevrolet offered to the public at the time.

This legendary 1969 Camaro ZL1 sold for $700,000 at Mecum Indy 2023.

Just curious if this was the Cliff Ernst ZL1? I got a chance to see his ZL1 back in 1994. Seen his whole car collection. My brother ask if he could fire up the ZL1. He did! Man that thing sounded amazing!!!

I wonder what it would have cost brand new. Likely, w/ the COPO pkg, somewhere in the 6k - 7k range.
