It should never have been political. That was due to media and bureaucracy. Media is supposed to question bureaucrats. Media failed when science was questioning the bureaucracy scientists. There was never settled science on the issue, but those who wanted to completely rule out a hypothesis before accepting a theory were shamed

I'm an American university-trained PhD research scientist, and any scientist that says anything in absolute terms is acting suspiciously! We almost always couch our answers (unless we're in the heat of a tense discussion and lose our cool, or are maybe playing devil's advocate). None of us can be 100% certain of anything.. there's always an alternate possibility and an expectation that we will discover something totally unexpected, outside of any widely-accepted hypothesis. The more we learn, the more we realize that we actually know less and less & the answer to one question generally gives rise to ten new questions. (I'm getting upset at the lack of responsibility on display by the visible 0.01% of scientists.. these spokespersons that are supposedly representing the rest of us, the entire body of biology researchers.. making us all look real) shady and unreliable.)
