Показать описание
Competitive Precision Walking! Yes, it's a thing. A massive thing in Japan. And guess what? it's bloody amazing! Shuudan Koudou is the Japanese art of Synchronized precision walking.
For over 50 years Japan's "Nippon Sports Science University" has practiced this art.
In 1966 the event was started in order to show off the athletic prowess of the university's students, proving they could work collectively as a group and master a highly disciplined training regime following strict rules.
It wasn't until 2011 that female students were first allowed to participate.
Training for the event is extremely strict, In addition to the exercises to keep them in shape, students practice the routine 3 days every week for a total of 5 months. By the time the training is over the students will have walked over 700 miles!.
The event is held every year in front of an audience of over 11,000 people and multiple television cameras. The students that participate believe that the event proves their ability to work as part of a team and to train hard to achieve their goals and that this will help them obtain employment after graduation.
Many former students of this university have gone on to be Olympic-level athletes.
13 gold, 10 silver, and 4 bronze medalists all studied at this university and participated in this event.
Other examples of Japanese precision are these objects that have been so precisely milled that the joint simply disappears!
Shuudan Koudou isn't the only type of precisely coordinated group activity in japan, these Japanese soldiers have to train for hours to obtain this level of synchronization.
And when it comes to precision with a blade, well, there really is no competition!
