I use both Teflon tape and thread compound. I also clean my joints after I'm done.

Im a gas tape guy myself over the pipe dope

Teflon tape is not a thread sealer; the dope/thread sealer paste is the sealer. The tape acts as a lube to decrease friction heat, thereby allowing a correct tightening without having the joint to expand from heat then shrinking from cooling causung leaks later. Pros mostly put dope, then a couple wraps tape. There is also paste with teflon in it.
