The worst feeling of being in a liminal space I've ever felt was when I was working on a project at my university at 4 AM with only one group member left after we'd hid from security to stay after hours and keep working.

I went to the first-floor vending machine, and that was bad enough, but when I was on the way back, I took the elevator to floor 2 instead of 3 by accident. All the floors look the same and this building was basically a bunch of narrow hallways weaving around the offices. I went to the right quiet study room on the wrong floor and no one was there. It was freaky.

I think we feel an existential dread, most of these are empty places, like ruins. Places with no context of their original purpose. Realizing that one day, we too will end, without any reminder of our existence except the spaces we left behind.

ALSO, I THINK I KNOW WHY LIMINAL SPACE BOTHERS US. It's a place that looks as though there should be people around, but it's been abandoned. Your brain sees this as an alarm. "There were people here, they're gone-- why did they leave? There must be a reason." Even if there's no danger, our brains see that we're alone in a place that people have gone away from, and panics.

its extremely unsettling when you see a picture or a room or whatever and there's nothing there, but there's also a shadow or a wall blocking something just out of view so it seems like something is there, just out of view. Even simply being in a room in a house where you can see opened doors and it just feels like there is something beyond the door when there isn't is just so nerve-wracking to me.

An example of a very common, everyday liminal space are elevators.

They’re literally spaces where we wait while we’re delivered from the place we were to the place we’re going. We’re only in them a short time so we often don’t notice the difference of the atmosphere and the way we feel and act in them, but it’s definitely a different vibe than almost any other place.
