--------
In this clip, Marvin Sapp spoke about meeting Fred Hammond, and he explained that when Fred was with the gospel group Commissioned, they performed their first concert at Marvin’s home church. Marvin explained that he opened up for them when he was 15, and he added that he was a huge fan of Commissioned at the time. Fred then got in contact with Marvin through his pastor, and Marvin explained that Fred spoke to him about filling a spot in Commissioned, which he turned down because of his career as a pastor. After about 8 months of speaking with Fred, Marvin decided to join Commissioned, and he spoke about how being around the other group members showed him how to be a man. Speaking about the group, Marvin explained how Commissioned was viewed as a 90s R&B group, and he added that a lot of the popular R&B singers of that time based their sound on Commissioned. Marvin added that the six years that he was with the group were the best years of his life.

Oh how I loved listening to Commissioned!!! I first heard them at a dept store warehouse sale. A guy put in a cassette to test out a stereo. I heard the music, ran over and inquired as to who was singing. Left the sale, went to the “wreckastow” and bought the album right away. It’s been a love affair ever since

Commissioned was my group back in day. I brought every tape and cd they made as a worship leader. I still listen to them. The harmonies were off the change

Great interview. I was introduced to Commissioned as a teenager and instantly took to their unique and sophisticated way of harmonizing, Bible based lyrics and their whole personas. I looked up to them as godly men and could just tell by their ministry that they were true godly men who walked upright. I didn't have an example of that in my home but I did in my church. It's awesome hearing Marvin Sapp confirm what I sensed even as a teenager who often struggled with being different and not doing all the things my friends were doing like sleeping around, selling drugs and more. Groups like Commissioned and the Winans showed me from a distance through their music that a man could be saved, cool and relevant without compromising integrity. Marvin Sapp is really good friends with a pastor who's church I was a long time vert active member of when I was stationed in Charleston, SC so I have heard him preach in person a couple of times and I will say that Reverend Sapp is an AMAZING orator. One visit he had copies of one of his first solo CD's and we couldn't wait to buy them after service. We were all choir members and used to have his CDs on repeat often. Thanks for posting the video!

Interestingly, despite the R&B and New Jack Swing incorporation of Commissioned; Take 6 in the late 80s/early 90s used to beat out Commissioned for alot of grammy awards, etc. I think it had alot to do with the novelty of how Take 6 incorporated Jazz and Acapella, etc. Also, Take 6 had some "safer" songs, by using slave spirituals, instead of writing contemporary songs like the ones of Commissioned.

My first experience with the awesome Marvin Sapp was in Muskegon, Mi. at Zion Baptist Church in the early eighties. I can't remember the name of the group that he was with, but I could tell back then that her was anointed in the gospel.
