I have the same issue with my floor, actually, mine might be worse in that I live in a very old farm style house - I built shelving off of my wall for my turntable and gear - no problem now, we can dance while playing a record - maybe you could build a shelf or maybe a single shelf just for your turntable especially given that you know where your studs are - - hey, wouldn't have minded meeting your cat! My 2 cents on a preamp - don't need me to mention it, there's tons of choices, although I'm running something different myself it seems like the "Puffin" is raved about for the money - and perhaps look toward an Ortofon cartidge at whatever price level you want to go for - imo, every cartridge they make is worth the asking price - the red, the blue etc. and yeah, you'll definitely need a better preamp for one of those - I'm running one of their higher end offerings, I'm very happy with it - the Windfeld Ti.
