I just wanted everyone to know that I had to edit out number 21 which was King Crimson because they blocked the video. I used nine seconds of 21st Century Schizoid Man and their management company did a manual takedown of the entire video for those 9 seconds.

Another vote for 1978! Dire Straits debut in the midst of the punk era proved that the clean strat sound was alive and well! Every track on that album was fantastic.

Living Colour's Vivid; similar to your list, memories of earlier days and hearing my older brother playing it and running downstairs to find out what it was. That opening guitar for "Cult of Personality" is insane and just an overall great album.

I missed “Black Sabbath” by “Black Sabbath” from “Black Sabbath”, it's where heavy metal as we know started, I also missed “Facelift” as is the first mainstream grunge album.

I like Chicago’s 1969 debut “The Chicago Transit Authority”. Peter Cetera’s Bass, Robert Lamm’s piano, Terry Katy’s and those horns!

Rick, I'm so glad that you included the Cars debut album. It's one of those albums that is best listened to as arranged instead of as a collection of singles - one song sets up the next and great transitions! Analog better than digital for sure! 1978 was a phenomenal year for music - I graduated high school then.
When I saw the name of the list, I just knew that you'd have to include Boston's debut, especially after you discussed the criteria you used to make the selections. I was hoping for a Top 5 ranking and thrilled to see #2! Tears to my eyes every time it's appreciated by you! Thanks!

Bad Company - "Bad Company"
Devo - "Q. Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!"
Tesla - "Mechanical Resonance"
Toto - "Toto"

Just What I Needed, Moving in Stereo, Best Friend's Girl, Good Times Roll, Cars debut is insane!

Black Sabbath is the one I was most expecting after you said “spawned multiple genres” in the intro. Good list tho! Many I need to check out.

Chicago Transit Authority - Chicago's first album is a classic, this album jams more than their following albums and still has a few hits on it. It didn't get much airplay until their popular 2nd album was released. ELP is another good one.

The first Dire Straits album. Also from 1978. Not just “Sultans of Swing”. Some amazing tracks on that record. Not sure what you bump off though. It’s a pretty strong list.

I am so happy you included the cars self titled album. That whole album was just pure music gold. Especially moving in stero/all mixed up

R.E.M.’s “Murmur”. They were already fully themselves on this 1983 debut album, which contains some of the most enduring songs in their catalogue. And the influence this band would have on the next two decades of alternative music was massive.

Elvis Costello - My Aim is True
Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville
The Strokes - Is This It

Maybe more pop than rock but The Stone Roses 1989 debut record is quite a gem!
