You can do “clipping mask” it’ll be like alpha lock, BUT it’s on a different layer, I find it very useful

I love doing this in a traditional medium, like acrylic paint, it's relaxing, but also damn are my traditional art skills lacking behind seeing as for two years now I've only used Procreate

Yeah this is good for maybe an object that has a more matte coating, but remekber to add extra shadows, darker ones all the way in the back of the sphere

If you're gonna make your object glossy, add some white highlights (or the color of your light source)
