The plastic like thing in a squid is called the quill, it’s used for support. When doing a squid dissection this year we used the quill and some of the squid ink to write. The ball like thing is the beak, that’s how they eat!

im very glad that youre being taught to correctly kill lobsters quickly and relatively painlessly. treating seafood animals like they have absolutely no nerve endings and therefore its okay to torture them beyond belief before ending them is still such a huge issue

So fun fact, thanks to my sophomore year biology class: yeah that part of the squid is what's left of their shells that have virtually disappeared with evolution, and the ball you remove is the ink sack
When we did our squid dissection our teacher had us use the mollusk "shell" but she called it a pen to dip in the ink sack and write with it on some paper. Now it was no 18th century love letter calligraphy type of handwriting, but it was still pretty cool that we could do that.
Now, I am very easily nauseous around anything bodily/dissection/surgery (like I couldn't even watch/listen to you chopping and pulling apart the different shellfish in this video) but dissecting the squids was the one I could stomach and I found fascinating. I had even skipped my 5th periods my junior and senior years to go be a student aide in her class for the dissections, they were always at the end of the year so I had all my papers and tests done by that time anyways so it didn't matter that I ditched at that point in the year, plus I was still learning something either way (instead of like leaving campus to ditch, cause I was a nerd like that) so my teachers didn't care I ditched for that. But yeah anyways squids and their evolutionary factors are truly fascinating.
