The Russian issue is the hyper centralism of the state and economy. The oligarch phenomenon basically means the economy is state owned since they answer to the Kremlin. Russia could absolutely roar if it went for free markets on the back of what it has now, rather than on the back of what it had immediately after the demise of the USSR.

Whenever there's an abundance of natural resouces, the people will demand welfare. They want to get a share of all the riches and never have to work for a day in their life anymore.

Ru didn't end up like Venezuela cos they never had a leader like Hugo Chavez. Rather than distributing all that oil wealth frivolously they did the opposite - saved like crazy. Even now their public debt is very low. They built up a massive reserve of over 600 bill, half of which Europe froze but it still shows how much they were being frugal. Wages were also suppressed by curbing welfare. Meanwhile massive strategic investments were made, for instance their Arctic development project is to the tune of 300 bill. This is in anticipation of global warming opening up the Arctic, which they intend to dominate. Ironically the military spending now is actually sending more of that wealth finally down to the people, as they have to offer generous salaries for joining the army. But upto now they were fortifying the country in preparation for this.

The first pipelelines to Europe already existed before the 90s, and in fact, oil is how the Americans were able to collapse the Soviet economy. They persuaded the Saudis to pump as much oil as they could in order to destroy the Soviet economy. And it worked.

Около завода холм, на нём отдыхают главный инженер и директор завода
(оба с приставкой "экс"). Смотрят на всё это.
