Ie evolution is an irregular multi branch tree, sometimes a good branch sometimes not, and not a linear progress from one species to another with the parent species having to go extinct as a new form arise (as so many incorrectly believe the theory says.)

"This textbook contains material on evolution." So far so good.
"Evolution is a theory, not a fact ..." Implying that these are somehow comparable. In fact, this is basically a sanitized version of "Evolution is just a theory, not a law". Evolution is a theory because outside mathematics that's the highest you can go in science ᵃ.
"... regarding the origin of living things" No, the theory of evolution is on how living organisms evolve. *Abiogenesis* is the theory on the origin of living things.
"[Keep] an open mind, [study] carefully, and critically [consider this text]." Sounds harmless enough, but has been used in one form or another to manipulate people into thinking that there's still uncertainty about the theory of evolution's validity and if evolution is a fact or not.

ᵃ A scientific theory is a predictive explanatory model about natural phenomena that contains facts, observations, experimentation, scientific laws and sometimes even other scientific theories. It is the highest one can go outside of mathematics in science because science realizes it may learn something tomorrow to invalidate what it knew yesterday.
