When i was in one of my vet tech class, the teacher gave us a thought experiment. She asked us "imagine your dream pet, anything from a real animal to a made up one. Go into all the detail, size, colour, everything" and i chose a tiny chinese dragon like Mushu! Then she asked us "have you thought about everything?" And when we answered yes, she asked "okay, what does it eat? Where does it poop? Does it need to be taken out for a walk? Does it need toys, enrichment? Is it big enough that you need an enclosure?" And so on. We all said no.

The goal of the experiment was to put us in the shoes of potential clients. They have a dream dog/cat but they dont always know what they need, or sometimes even care what they need. We need to understand the excitement of getting your dream animal and how its easy to forget the detail of animal care when youre THIS excited. And it's our role to figure out how to safely let the old frail lady get that german shepherd, because no matter how much we tell her it's a bad idea, she'll just do it behind our back and she won't have our insight to help. We need to be open minded and not think "can't let the mom of a 3 year old get a boxer!!" And instead think "how can we find a way to keep her child safe while the boxer is there?". Training, crate when the baby is at home, wait until the baby is older.... but never "no way, get lost"
